IN MEMORIAM: Derrick Lovell MBE and Peter Turner

25 Nov 2025

Southern Counties Archery Society Lifetime Members

We are greatly saddened to hear of the loss of two long-standing members of the SCAS community: Derrick Lovell, International Judge and Honorary Life Vice-president of SCAS, and Peter Turner, formerly SCAS Vice Chair and, for many years, our Field Tournament liaison and organiser.

Derrick Lovell MBE

Derrick Lovell

Derrick Lovell was a lifetime contributor to the sport of Archery and to SCAS. He was well known to many – in and beyond the UK – as an International Judge. For SCAS, he had long served as a Trustee and his services to Archery were recognised in 2023 with the honorary award of Life Vice President of the region.

Derrick’s contribution to archery cannot easily be overstated. He served as President of Archery GB, as an International Judge in both Target and Field disciplines, and as a member of World Archery’s field and 3D committee, and the constitution and rules committee. First qualifying as a judge in 1976, Derrick was chair of the judging commission at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and officiated at many major internationals from his International accreditation in 1993 until his retirement in 2009, when he was made judge emeritus.

A dedicated Field archer, Derrick was a well known, liked and respected member of the SCAS community. He will be greatly missed.

A Tribute to Derrick: A Life Dedicated to Archery

Peter Turner

At SCAS, we remember Peter Turner particularly as a long-serving Vice Chairman of SCAS and as the SCAS Field Tournament organiser for many years. He was a regular presence at Regional Council, always promoting the discipline of Field Archery as both our Tournament Organiser and as our liaison to the national Field Committee.

Peter’s contributions to archery, however, extended well beyond the Region. A dedicated Field Archer, he reached the UK field archery top ten in recurve and instinctive styles and joined the UK national squad as a shooting member. To help develop the sport, and to help others progress, he initially qualified as an instructor, going on to be a coach, and later served on the UK squads as a Field coach. He also qualified as a National Field judge, and was a well known, well liked and respected presence at Field competitions across the UK.

For his services to Field Archery, both in the Region and Nationally, Peter was awarded the SCAS Gold medal and an Archery GB Silver Plaquette in 2016. His great dedication to Archery was also recognised nationally in 2011, with the award of a Torch Trophy, an annual cross-sport award honouring volunteers in sport from the Torch Trophy Trust.
